We did it!

Well, the 2010 Susan G Komen 3-Day for the Cure was this past weekend in Atlanta and WE DID IT!  We all met up Thursday night before Day 1 to have a Carbfest at the Olive Garden at the Mall of Georgia.  We ate some paste and had a few cocktails and just relaxed with our new friends.  Friday morning, we were up at 4 am for breakfast, packing up and catching the shuttle to Lake Lanier Islands for Opening Ceremonies.  We ran into Karen Greer from 11 Alive (rumor is she also walked 60 miles too!), we met friends from out of town including Connecticut and Virginia who came down to walk in Atlanta.  One B4B member and survivor was selected to Participate in the Survivor's Circle.  A circle of 8 survivors to bear flags.  My mom carried the Optimism flag.

Day 1 - we walked out of Lake Lanier Islands, through downtown Buford where we ran into Pam, Cheryl, April and Chaney!  Almost the whole team met up at the Pit Stop in Buford for a group photo.  We were only missing Sue & Katharine here, Sue is our 68 year old 7-year survivor with bad knees.  She was doing the best she could on Day 1, but was trailing towards the end and daughter, Katharine, stuck with her.  We walked down through Sugar Hill, Suwanee and ended up at Camp in Duluth, Georgia.  Many thanks to the City of Duluth for allowing us to use their park along the Chattahoochee River.

Day 2 - rough night at camp.  40 degrees and NO sleep for the walkers!  6:30 am came way to quickly to begin walking at 8 am.  But we all did it.  Yummy hot breakfast under the dining tent, then off to walk another 20 miles.  We walked through Duluth, Norcross, Johns Creek, Peachtree Corners, had lunch at Norcross High School, then circled back around to Duluth to camp.  Interviews today - Chelley did hers, I missed mine.  Arrived back at camp too late and they were all packed up.  Some of the ladies went home for a few hours for Homecoming with their kids, then back before the Dance Party Saturday night!!

Day 3 - we were bused from Camp in Duluth to Chamblee High School to begin walking from there.  Day 3 is always my favorite day!  Walking through Chamblee, Buckhead and Downtown Atlanta is awesome!  Day 3 is a very hilly route and by this time, I thought I would just about keel over!  Route Safety kept telling us "it's all downhill from here" - which turned out to be LIES!  Every time we rounded a corner, it seemed like another hill!!!!!  But we arrived at Turner Field at 4 pm and tailgated with our families.  The husbands had burgers and hot dogs ready for us - and most important - a cold beer!  Closing Ceremonies was emotional.  When the survivors walk in and we salute them with one show off holding it in the air, it's overwhelming.

We did it!  And we can't wait to do it again!!!

Only 8 weeks to go!!

Peyton is her "HERO"
We have been on a fundraising frenzy these past few weeks and it has paid off!  We held a yogathon and raised $180 in 2 hours.  We had a booth at the Snellville Farmers Market and raised over $200 there.  And we set up tables at our local WalMart and raised $1050 in 5 hours there.  We almost completely sold OUT of our Fight Like a Girl tshirts and had orders for 10 more to deliver this week!!  We met some fabulous ladies during the day including a 3-time survivor and a young lady in her 20's that is battling very agressive breast cancer right now.  Her short term goal is to make it to 100 days without the cancer coming back.  She discovered that she had breast cancer while she was pregnant, and didn't start treatments until after Peyton was born.  He is her "hero".

On Sunday, September 12th from 1-5 we have a Hair Night fundraiser at Jackie & Co. hair salon in Suwanee, Georgia.  The salon is normally closed on Sundays, but they are graciously opening up the salon and donating 50% of the proceeds that day to Babes for Boobs!  We will also have our coveted Fight Like a Girl tshirts and cookbooks for sale on this date, and Paula Rushing with Beauticontrol will be on hand offering discounts on her skin care products as well.  So book your appointment today by calling 770.904.4540.

We are raffling off an Apple ipad for $10 per ticket, 200 tickets sold out in 2 weeks!  The drawing will be held on September 20th at Athens First Bank in Monroe.  Tickets sold like crazy and we will be doing a second raffle!  Tickets only $10 - chances are 1:200 of winning!  That's better odds than Cherokee or Beau Rivage casinos!

B4B in the News

If you live in the Braselton or Hoschton area, be sure and check out the Features Section of The Paper.  Katie Dunn has proven to be a friend of the B4B team since the 2009 3-Day walk.  She wrote a story about my mom and I as a mother-daughter team walking together to celebrate my mom's 10 year anniversary of being CANCER FREE.  After the walk was over last year, she did a tearful follow up with us sitting in the dining room at Wendy's in Braselton.

For the new 2010 season, she has written a Feature story on the B4B team joining efforts with a local Yoga Studio in Hoschton to raise money and awareness of breast cancer.  Heather Swint of Soul Shine Yoga & Wellness offered to host a Yogathon Fundraiser at her yoga studio.  All proceeds will go to B4B.  Heather has been directly affected by cancer, both in her mother and her sister.  This cause means alot to all of us.

Check out the Features Section of The Paper in the Braselton/Hoschton/Chateau Elan area and attend the Yogathon on Friday, August 27th from 7-9 if you can!  We are requesting a donation of $20 pp but we will not turn anyone away.  There will be prize drawings as well!!

Go to www.jacksoncountyyoga.com for details, directions or more information about the Yogathon.

My Mom Bought this for me....

My mom and I went walking about two weeks ago and she had a gift for me, she was dying to show it to me too.  I had to STOP walking to look at it, it could not wait until after we were finished.  Since we walked last year together and are walking again this year, she found this online for me.

Atlanta 3-Day is approaching FAST!!

So we are 10 1/2 weeks from the Atlanta 3-day.  Boy has this summer gone by fast!  We've had some injuries on team walkers to work through, but we are on the mend!  We are in official "training" mode now and trying to sell more Fight Like a Girl tshirts and cookbooks - $15 each and all the proceeds go to Susan G Komen.  This is our team fundraiser.

We are also designing our walk tshirts.  We will wear these on all 3 days of the walk with our sponsors proudly displayed on the back!  We are also designing our sweatshirt for those chilly mornings in October.  Any suggestions for a design?  Welcoming those suggestions and ideas.

Goose Bumps

Yesterday I was driving through Buford toward Cumming to attend a Continuing Ed class on Blogging for Business that my company was hosting for Atlanta real estate agents. I was in the process of calling Katharine on the phone when I pulled up to an intersection red light. I suddenly got goose bumps from what seemed out of nowhere. So I looked up the check the light, and noticed where I was sitting. I was sitting at the intersection of Buford Drive @ Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. At that point I realized WHY I had gotten goose bumps. I was sitting at one of the intersections we crossed on the 2009 3-Day Route. Those 3 days changed my life forever - IN A GOOD WAY!!! And I can't wait to do it again in 2010!!

Cookbook Fundraiser

We are looking very closely at putting together a team cookbook as our primary fundraiser for 2010. We sold over 1200 Fight Like a Girl tshirts in 2009 and raised enough money for all 10 team members to walk - that is our goal this year too, but we are up to 14 team members now with several "pending" walkers on the fence!

Fundraiser cookbooks require minimal up front investment and can be very lucrative! Chelley and I are looking at several options online and awaiting the info kit. But the recipes would come from the team and friends, we would have OUR story and our Corporate Sponsors would also be included on a SPONSOR page. We already have a couple of sponsors to fund the initial cost and and getting the books to us to start selling! As soon as we know how much we want to sell the books for, we will send out a pre-order form to everyone hoping to generate sales.

The tshirt fundraiser last year was VERY successful, let's make the cookbooks just as successful in 2010!!

We do still have some Fight Like a Girl tshirts left and we have reduced the price to $15. Chelley has the shirts at her house so check with her on available sizes!!

2010 Fundraising

We have started fundraising and are already finding that raising the funds may be a little more difficult in 2010 than it was in previous years. So start early. It is March and the walk is 230 days away. That is only 6 1/2 months until Phase 1 registration begins and you have to give up your credit card number!

Utilize the letters on the 3-day web site. Customize those letters. Start sending them out NOW! And Good luck to everyone doing a 3-day walk across the nation!

Doing in again in 2010!!

Babes for Boobs is doing it again in 2010!! Team Captain, Chelley Young, is getting us motivated and excited about walking 60 miles in 3 days in Atlanta in October!!!

The 10 of us walked together in 2009 and had the most amazing experience. Chelley will be a 3-peat in 2010 - the rest of us are just "repeats". But we had the best times together over the summer doing funraisers at the Lawrenceville Farmers Market, selling tshirts and totebags in the pouring down rain at the Statham Sunflower Festival, soliciting donations from family and friends, meeting for lunch to strategize about how to raise more donations!!!! We had a wonderful Ladies White Elephant Gift Exchange hosted by none other than the Hostess with the Mostest - Chelley!

In 2009 our team raised more than $31,000 colectively selling "Fight Like a Girl" tshirts and totebags and collecting donations. We also sold corporate sponsorships for our team - companies could make a donation of a minimum amount and their corporate logo would be on the back of our walk tshirts for 3 whole days!!!!

After spending all time and effort fundraising, bonding, collaborating, motivating, complaining, and whining - after the walk was over, we were at a loss. I personally felt like someone had died. I missed my new forever friends and teammates.
